Sage 50, Sage 50cloud, Sage 50c, Sage Accounts, Line 50, Sage Line 50, 50 Accounts – these are some of the many names I hear as a Sage consultant of over 15 years, and this is not an exhaustive list and is the polite version.

Let’s start with the name, officially all of the above is referring to the same piece of software, Sage 50cloud Accounts. There are two variants of this, Standard and Professional (more on this part later). To keep it simple, I’ll be referring to it as Sage 50.

So, what is Sage 50?

In short, it is desktop accountancy software that can help all small to medium businesses with their main accounting needs. Whether that be managing debtors and creditors to submitting your VAT digitally online to HMRC in the UK or to the Revenue in Ireland.

It has a very user-friendly interface and once installed, set up and available can be used by anyone without the need to know all about double-entry book-keeping.

When opening Sage 50 you are presented with the home screen, as below,

This is kept up-to-date by Sage and has links to relevant changes in legislation such as Brexit and Coronavirus – very useful.

What is Sage 50 used for?

Sage 50 is used by many businesses in the UK and Ireland for their day to day accounting transactions.

This could be simply logging money in versus money out, an example of a cash receipt below.

In many businesses, it is used for entering invoices (out of the box invoice layout below) and chasing debt.

These invoices can be edited to include your logo and any text you wish to add around payment terms, bank details and here at itas we would be more than happy to support you with this.

Who uses Sage 50?

Sage 50 is very much a one size fits all, out of the box accountancy solution for all industries. Mainly used by the small to medium size segment Sage 50 can help manage and grow your business by moving your accounts from a paper-based, often Excel, system to a digital alternative.

In my experience, Sage 50 fits really well with businesses looking to implement new processes and compliance within their Accounting. They are looking to have greater visibility, decision making and control around performance through better reporting and quality data processing.

Unknown to many new and existing Sage 50 customers there are also specific settings that can be turned on for Charity and NFP businesses (screenshot below) and also around Project Costing and CIS.

What is the difference between Sage 50 Standard and Sage 50 Professional?

Both have the same basic functions around simple accounting practices, invoicing, cash flow management and VAT submission (below).

Professional has many more features and functions specifically around ordering, stock control (such as Bill of Materials below), multi-user access and reporting.

How much is Sage 50?

Sage 50cloud Accounts Standard starts at £66 a month for a single user, one company version.

Sage 50cloud Accounts Professional starts at £137.50 a month for a single user, one company version.

Is Sage 50 a Cloud-based system?

I know the word Cloud is used in “Sage 50cloud Accounts”, but it is not a native cloud piece of software. To be able to use the product you would have to fully install it onto a compatible Windows PC. You can connect remote users to a Cloud-connected version of the data from your main site or user.

Note: Sage 50 does not work on a Mac as standard.

If you do require a true Cloud accounting package then Sage 200 Standard or Sage Intacct are better options. You can explore the benefits of Cloud accounting software, here and which products are available on the Cloud
