As the no. 1 ranked CRM in the world, its no wonder that those that love Salesforce want to make sure whatever accounting platform they use integrates well and there are a huge number of benefits to integrating your accounting software with Salesforce which we have already discussed in a number of previous blogs. As a qualified Salesforce administrator, I have worked with a number of accounting platforms that integrate with Salesforce both on and off-platform. The plan for this blog is to make you fully aware of what options you have for connecting your Salesforce and accounting systems, whether that is Sage or something else. So if you are looking for accounting software that integrates with Salesforce, you have come to the right place!

So the first question on the agenda is:

Does Salesforce do accounting?

And the answer is no….with a qualifier! If you mean does Salesforce the CRM do accounting then no it doesn’t. However, Salesforce is more than just a CRM, it’s also a platform that developers can build apps on, and if you are asking if there are accounting apps on the Salesforce platform then the answer is yes! But before we dial into that, let’s dig into what options you have to integrate Salesforce with your accounting software.

So what types of Salesforce integration are available?

There are a number of different types of integration, let’s examine them in a bit more detail:

  1. On Platform – There are accounting apps that are built by developers to sit on the salesforce platform. You log into the salesforce platform and access their financials within there.
  2. Connectors – Going, to be honest, I only know one of these and that’s Sage Intacct but it’s so different to the others I thought it needs separating out. This is where there is a separate financial platform but a deep integration with the ability to sync accounting information onto the Salesforce platform as well as popping finance screens from within Salesforce itself.
  3. API Direct Integration – This is when you get a developer to build an integration between Salesforce and your accounting system using the inbuilt web services. This is usually a real-time integration but can be done in batches.
  4. Integration tools – There are a number of “codeless” integration tools that can sit between Salesforce and your accounting system.

So why are there so many options? Just like choosing accounting software, there are pros and cons to each, so when it comes to choosing the right solution it’s worth considering all options!

Let’s discuss the pros and cons and then we have examples of each type of integration further down!

Integration type Pros Cons
On Platform
  • Share the same data set
  • Use salesforce workflows with both
  • Use the salesforce customisation tools
  • Chatter integration
  • Lots of sync points out of the box
  • Platform doesn’t work well for financial users as been designed for CRM
  • Reporting tools which again don’t work well for financial or as at reporting
  • Reporting tools are often code-heavy or limited in data
  • Costs of storage/API calls as you add more historical data/integrations on the platform
  • Limited to salesforce permission setups which can be complex i.e. between entities
  • Have to upgrade SF and financials at the same time
Connectors (Sage Intacct)
  • Share data and build workflows without compromising on CRM or finance capabilities
  • Tweak the integration when needed with the ability to map custom fields/change processes & objects synced without the need for developers
  • Useful error messages/validations
  • Doesn’t take up custom objects
  • Quick to deploy
  • Smart Sync minimises API consumption
  • Auto upgrades and always salesforce compatible
  • Chatter integration
  • More functionality than just data sharing
  • Lots of sync points out of the box
  • Limited to objects available to sync in the connector
  • Only works with standard objects in Salesforce, if you aren’t able to work with these or populate the information there it won’t work for you.
API Direct
  • Completely Bespoke Integration that can be designed exactly to the way you want
  • Limited to objects in API
  • Requires developer to build and support
  • Error messages/validations need to be built into code/salesforce
  • More integration points, the more cost
  • May need reviewing when on platform changes happen i.e. upgrades
  • Can require consultants to understand and design integration
  • Requires additional software/development for more functionality based i.e. printing invoice
Integration Tools
  • Completely Bespoke Integration that can be designed exactly to the way you want
  • Can be tweaked by consultants or super users vs developers
  • Workflow tools can be used to automate processes as well as data sync
  • Can often be used to connect in different ways than just via API
  • More integration points, the more cost
  • Some integration platforms require hosting if not cloud
  • Can require consultants to understand and design integration
  • May need reviewing when on platform changes happen i.e. upgrades
